Cratos Premium: The new Sun City

For years Turkish propaganda has successfully painted Cyprus as an issue between two rival ethnic communities, Greeks and Turks, in an attempt to legitimize the ongoing Turkish military occupation of the island’s northern territory. By twisting history and religion, Turkey has been able to mislead millions into believing that the issue at hand in Cyprus is between two feuding ethnicities, rather than about an illegal military occupation that causes all Cypriots to suffer. Cyprus is less of an ethnic conflict and more about two religious communities divided by imperialism and the colonization.

In Turkey’s continued campaign to separate Christian and Muslim Cypriots into ‘Greek’ and ‘Turkish’, the Turkish government has allowed the Turkish company BOZGROUP to build the largest tourist resort on the island in its illegally occupied territory. The BOZGROUP has invested over $220 million into the Cratos Premium Hotel-Casino-Port-Spa in the occupied city of Kyrenia, in hopes of luring unsuspecting tourists to the self pro-claimed ‘Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus’ to party the night away on the graves of innocent women and children. What is the ‘TRNC’ one may ask, well its nothing more then a code name for the Turkish Military used in order to masked Turkey’s military occupation and paint it into a peace mission protecting the ‘Turkish Cypriot’ community. The majority of which are Turkish settlers brought to the island after the 1974 illegal invasion, in hopes of changing the ethnic makeup of the island.

Which brings us back to the issue at hand. The Cratos Premium tourist resort and the recent controversial cancelation of Jennifer Lopez, who was scheduled to perform at a concert celebrating the opening of the resort, as well as the 36 anniversary of the Turkish invasion of the island. Lopez’s cancelation came as a result of an online campaign initiated by the Cyprus Action Network of America, CANA, which was supported by AHEPA and thousands of individuals on facebook that wrote the celebrity. In an official statement, Ms. Lopez claimed she ‘would never knowingly support any state, country, institution or regime that was associated with any form of human rights abuse’. J.Lo’s appearance was to be used to bring ‘legitimacy’ to the illegal entity in the North, which proclaims itself independent from the internationally recognized government in the South.

The question now is whether other celebrities, like Sean Paul who is scheduled to perform in the Occupied Zone in August, will follow in J.Lo’s footsteps and boycott Cratos Premium, Cyprus’ own ‘Sun City’. Some of you reading may remember Sun City, the luxury casino and resort in South Africa, which was boycotted in 1980s by Artists United Against Apartheid. With musicians today boycotting shows in Israel over human rights abuses against Palestinians, as well as boycotts against performing in Arizona over a new immigration law, it is not too farfetched to imagine a similar boycott against Cratos Premium in order to bring attention to Occupied Cyprus and perhaps finally see the removal of Turkish troops and settlers from the birthplace of the Goddess of Love, Aphrodite.

ANC Australia, AUA Australia, AHC (NSW) release joint statement

SYDNEY: At the invitation of the Australian Hellenic Council (AHC NSW), the Armenian National Committee of Australia (ANC Australia) and the Assyrian Universal Alliance (AUA) held a three-way conference in Sydney to discuss genocide awareness in Australia.

The conference, which was held to address the significant shared concerns of the three public affairs organisations, brought about an atmosphere of cooperation on issues of human rights, genocide recognition and freedom of speech.

Executive Director Mr. Varant Meguerditchian, who led the ANC Australia delegation at the three-way meeting, stated that with the AUA and the AHC, ANC Australia had begun a process to build a coalition in opposition to genocide and its subsequent denial.

He said: "ANC Australia, the AHC and the AUA as representatives of those Australian communities who were subjected to genocide in the early part of the 20th century have a moral obligation to raise genocide awareness in the political and public spheres.

"By combining the collective will of the Armenian-Australian, Assyrian-Australian and Australian Hellenic communities we are presenting a united front in opposition to genocide denial in Australia."

AHC NSW Secretary Dr. Panayiotis Diamadis added: "Raising public awareness shall serve as the building block to recognition and condemnation of the first genocides of the 20th century."

The Armenian-Australian, Australian Hellenic and Assyrian-Australian communities represent a sizable portion of the Australian voting public. They see recognition of the Armenian Genocide, the Hellenic Genocide and the Assyrian Genocide as an issue of fundamental importance.

Mr. Hermiz Shahen, AUA Regional Secretary for Australia and New Zealand, stated that "our commitment to genocide awareness was all about influencing Australian government policy to bring an end to the cycle of genocide".

Based on the shared concerns of their respective communities, ANC Australia, AHC and AUA have released the following joint statement, outlining their agreement to focus on genocide recognition:

Whereby, Australia is signatory to the UN Genocide Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide and has demonstrated leadership on international human rights issues; whereby, the people of Australia provided food, clothing and shelter to victims and survivors of the Armenian Genocide, the Hellenic Genocide and the Assyrian Genocide as part of an international humanitarian relief effort known as the Near East Relief; and whereby, throughout World War One, Australian servicemen witnessed the systematic annihilation of the Armenian, Hellenic and Assyrian peoples in the Ottoman Empire from 1915 - 1922; ANC Australia, the AHC and the AUA commit to their moral responsibility to seek recognition of the Armenian Genocide, Hellenic Genocide and Assyrian Genocide by the Federal Government of Australia as a measure aimed at preventing similar crimes against humanity from ever occurring again.

Jennifer Lopez Out of Controversial N. Cyprus Concert
50 minutes ago by TMZ Staff

Jennifer Lopez has officially "withdrawn" from a concert in a European territory
currently under military occupation -- claiming she never would have agreed to
perform had she known the "relevant circumstances" surrounding the intense
political situation.

Lopez was scheduled to perform in Turkish-occupied Northern Cyprus ... an area
that neither the United Nations nor the European Union recognize as an
independent sovereign state ... because of the way it was illegally occupied by
the Turkish military in 1974.

In fact, multiple Greek and Cypriot politicians expressed anger after reports
surfaced claiming Lopez had agreed to perform at a swanky hotel in Northern
Cyprus on July 24.

But a rep for Lopez tells TMZ, "Jennifer Lopez would never knowingly support any
state, country, institution or regime that was associated with any form of human
rights abuse."

The rep added, "After a full review of the relevant circumstances in Cyprus, it
was the decision of management to withdraw from the appearance. This was a team
decision that reflects our sensitivity to the political realities of the
region."

GRASS-ROOTS POWER: AVALANCHE AGAINST JENNIFER LOPEZ PERFORMING IN OCCUPIED CYPRUS

For Immediate Release: July 8, 2010

Contact: Nikolaos Taneris, New York, Tel. (917) 699-9935

NEW YORK—Following the initiative taken up by Cyprus Action Network of America
CANA on June 30, 2010 to respectfully protest American celebrity Jennifer
Lopez’s illegal visit to Turkish-occupied Cyprus, thousands of Greek-Cypriots
in the homeland and the diaspora answered the call by bombarding multimedia with
the truth and media began to listen. Beginning with a report by Helena Smith of
the GUARDIAN UK on July 5 th, an avalanche of international news reports have
been issued citing the illegal Turkish invasion and illegal Turkish-occupation
of Cyprus in regards claims of Lopez’s illegal visit to Turkish-Occupied Cyprus.
We also have gained the support of Greek-Cypriot advocacy groups in Cyprus and
around the world, below follows extensive links documenting all our successful
efforts to send out a cry for help worldwide for justice for CYRPUS. Moreover
the call for justice was made by two Greek-Cypriot Refugee women, Mrs. Fanoulla
Argyrou who wrote the letter “Dr. Ms Jennifer Lopez, 800 Greek-Cypriot women
were raped by Turks in 1974…” which has been translated following massive
demand in Greek and Spanish and circulated in three languages was quoted by the
Guardian and international media syndication, and Refugee mother and President
of CYPRUS' MOVEMENT OF REFUGEES & DISPLACED MOTHERS Markella Isaia-Chakka's
letter to Jennifer Lopez has made such an impact that it was also translated in
French. The campaign starts to permeate in the French-speaking world, as the
Agence France-Presse has syndicated the story, and it has also been reported by
the largest French TV network TF1.

GRASS-ROOTS POWER: THANK YOU TO ALL OUR SUPPORTERS AND FRIENDS

Despite the millions spent on high profile public relations specialists and
media agents to bring the American star Jennifer Lopez by Turkey in order to
falsely “legitimize” the crimes against our people and the theft of our
homeland, it was our grass-roots, our ordinary people who turned it on them and
instead the entire world was reminded of the truth. The truth that Turkey is
guilty of crimes against humanity that include the illegal-invasion and ongoing
illegal-occupation of our people, our heritage, our culture. This is a power
that comes from the beating heart of our ordinary people. We cannot, of course,
ignore the world around us, nor fail to think clearly about how best to tackle
the challenges ahead. We owe that to ourselves and to future generations. The
bottom line is this: Stay active, speak out, stand strong.
Many thanks to our friends and supporters on the tough road to the final
victory—worldwide recognition of the Turkish crimes perpetrated against the
Greek-Cypriot people and full restoration and full restitution. In other words:
Justice.

FANOULLA ARYGROU HONORS 91st PONTIAN GENOCIDE COMMEMORATIONS

For Immediate Release: May 22, 2010

Contact: Nikolaos Taneris, New York, Tel. (917) 699-9935

NEW YORK—Distinguished author and researcher Mrs. Fanoulla Argyrou presented her
scholarly findings based on her groundbreaking research in the British Foreign
Office to a broad range of youth organizations, community meetings, media
outlets and public events in the Greater New York area to commemorate the 91st
Anniversary of May 19th the International Remembrance Day for the Pontian Greek
Genocide, at the invitation of the Pan Pontian Federation of USA and CANADA

Mrs. F. Argyrou is specialised in the study of the British official released
Foreign Office documents on Cyprus with an experience of well over 20 years on
the matter. Argyrou has written 8 books (of the 8 books that Argyrou wrote, one
covers the Pontian Genocide) , numerous studies, speeches in conferences,
hundreds of articles in the Greek Cypriot press in Cyprus and is an associate
writer with London based newspapers “Ta Nea”, “Eleftheria” and “Simerini” in
Cyprus as well as others and Radio Proto in Cyprus. Her first hand research has
had strong affects on the political climate in Cyprus, and her findings have
raised serious questions about the official handling of the Cyprus question, and
the dangers involved with the Turkish-inspired bizonal bicommunal federation
plans. Arygrou’s research, political analysis and methodology in communicating
the truth about Turkish Crimes has inspired entire generations of activists. It
was with deep respect that she was received by patriots in the Greek-American
community.

Argyrou’s speeches and presentations focused on the British archival record
which is her specialty. However, also covered were timely revelations of fact,
including details on the war crimes background to Mehmet Ali Talat, and long
term efforts to Turkify the entire Greek Island of Cyprus, by means of the
bizonal bicommunal so-called “solutions” Also discussed was the importance of
the book “The Bloody Truth” (available for download on the CANA website and in
hard copy ,free of charge from CANA) In the book are details on the gory
massacres and cover-ups by the Turkish terrorist organizations Volgan and TMT,
as well as research that includes Turkish documents on Turkish Crimes in Cyprus.
This book presents irrefutable evidence against Turkey for its unpunished crimes
in Cyprus.

The overall success of Fanoulla Argyrou’s visit to New York was in hammering
home the truth, with irrefutable evidence, on the cycle of Genocide that Turkey
is responsible for from Asia Minor to Cyprus. And the fact that Turkey remains
and remained an aggressor because Turkey continues to escape punishment for its
crimes. Notable attendees and messages of support for the events came in from
Ted G. Spyropoulos, USA Coordinator, World Council of Hellenes Abroad and Dr.
Olga Sarantopoulos, Secretary of World Council of Hellenes Abroad who flew into
New York from Vienna. The events were also followed by a “who’s who” of Greek
and Greek-Cypriot journalists and academics, who like it or not, couldn’t stay
away from hearing the truth—almost the entire journalistic staff of The
National Herald TNH, Demetrios Rhombotis of AKTINA FM and staff from NEO
magazine, Alex Stephanopoulos and Despina Syriopoulou of Greek American News
Agency, Apostolos Zoupaniotis correspondent for RIK and CNA Cyprus News Agency,
and even Dr. Christos P. Ioannides the Director of the Center for Byzantine and
Modern Greek Studies at Queens College, City University of New York, to name
just a few.

pleased that the fervor for justice is growing stronger with each passing year,
as much as the bizonal bicommunal clique with their political ineptitude and
personal agendas would like to bury this issue of memorialising 20th of July
with muddled messages and talks (to the tune of bouzoukia and baglamades) on
so-called "solutions" that involve so-called "federations" with the very
criminals who perpetrated a HOLOCAUST on Greek-Cypriots, we say NEVER AGAIN. We
will not be silent, and we are not going away.

ANCA MARKS ANNIVERSARY OF PONTIAN GENOCIDE

Reaffirms Commitment to a Truthful and Just Resolution of all of Turkey's
Genocidal Crimes

WASHINGTON, DC - The Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA) joined today
with Pontian Greeks - and all Hellenes, Assyrians, Syriacs, and other
communities representing the victims of Turkey's genocidal campaign against its
Christian minorities - in commemorating May 19th, the international day of
remembrance for the genocide initiated by the Ottoman Empire and continued by
Kemalist Turkey against the historic Greek population of Pontus along the
southeastern coast of the Black Sea.

"We join with all our brothers and sisters - in the Hellenic, Assyrian,
Chaldean, Syriac, and other Christian communities subjected to genocide under
Ottoman and Turkish rule - in solemnly marking the anniversary of the Pontian
Genocide - a genocide that remains unrecognized by its perpetrator and
unpunished by the international community," said Aram Hamparian, Executive
Director of the ANCA. "In commemorating this date, we reaffirm our determination
to work in concert with all the victims of Turkey's genocidal campaigns to
secure full recognition and justice for these crimes."

The Ottoman Empire, under the cover of World War I, undertook a systematic and
deliberate effort to eliminate its minority Christian populations. This
genocidal campaign resulted in the death and deportation of well over 2,000,000
Armenians, Assyrians, Chaldeans, Syriacs, and Greeks.

The Pontian Genocide has been formally acknowledged by Greece and Cyprus and,
within the United States, by the states of New York, New Jersey, Florida, South
Carolina, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and Illinois, among others.

91st ANNIVERSARY OF PONTIAN GREEK GENOCIDE COMMEMORATED IN NEW YORK CITY

New York, NY --- The Armenian National Committee of America Eastern Region (ANCA
ER) joined with a broad range of Greek American associations at the annual
commemoration of the Pontian Greek Genocide held at Bowling Green Park in New
York City. The solemn program coincided with a special flag raising ceremony to
mark the occasion.

The event was organized by the Pan-Pontian Federation of USA and Canada and the
Federation of Hellenic Societies of Greater New York. Gus Tsilfides, Director
of National Issues of the Pan-Pontian Federation of USA and Canada, serving as
the master of ceremonies, addressed the crowd and urged for decisive action for
recognition of the Pontian Genocide. Along with speakers from various Greek
American organizations, the commemoration also included statements delivered by
representatives of Greece and Cyprus, and a keynote speech from distinguished
author and researcher, Fanoulla Argyrou. The event also highlighted statewide
proclamations and resolutions recognizing the Pontian Genocide, and the
Ypsilantis Honor Award presented to the people of Sweden for passing a
resolution to recognize the Armenian, Greek, and Assyrian Genocide.

“91 years on and Turkey is still escaping punishment for those unprecedented
crimes of the past century. Turkey refuses to acknowledge those crimes, refuses
to apologize, the least expected of her, compromise with history and come to
terms with it,” said Argyrou. “Μodern Kemalist Turkey has been created over the
dead bodies of hundreds of thousands of Christian Armenians, Greeks, and
Assyrians, who were ethnically cleansed to pave the way for the new state of
Turkey. It is an established fact that modern Turkey evolved out of the ashes of
one of the most horrific genocides recorded at the beginning of the 20th
century.”

Speaking on behalf of the ANCA ER was Executive Director Garo Manjikian who
stated, “We are, most importantly, here to commemorate the victims of the
genocide - those who were brutally murdered by the Ottoman Turks and the newly
established Turkish Republic. We are also here to demand justice, because all
crimes call for justice. The absence of justice has allowed Turkey to continue
with aggressive policies towards its own minorities and even neighboring
countries. It is an issue that affects us today.”

Highlighted at the event was Rhode Island State Resolution, S2815, that
proclaims May 19, 2010 as “Greek Pontian Genocide Remembrance Day” in the state
of Rhode Island. The Rhode Island State Resolution was introduced by Senators
Leonidas Raptakis, Hanna Gallo, Paul Jabbour, Daniel Connors and Dennis Algiere.
Also noted were proclamations by New York State Senator George Onorato and State
Assembly Member Michael Gianaris.

Earlier in the day, candidate Michael Grimm, running in the Republican primary
race in New York’s 13th congressional district, released a statement
commemorating the Pontian Genocide. “Many people are unaware of the violence
and genocide perpetrated against the Pontian Greek population in Asia Minor at
the hands of the Turkish government during the early part of the twentieth
century, or the genocides that befell the Armenian and Assyrian populations of
the region. It is important for all New Yorkers and all Americans to recognize
Pontian Greek Genocide Remembrance Day because it is only by recognizing these
tragic events will we prevent their repetition in that region of the world and
elsewhere,” said Grimm. Currently representing New York’s 13th district is Rep.
Michael McMahon who opposes Armenian Genocide recognition.

Distinguished speakers and statements from those who could not attend include :
Gus Tsilfides, Director of National Issues, Pan-Pontian Federation of USA &
Canada; Reverend Father John Romas from the nearby historic St. Nicholas church
that was destroyed on 9/11; Vasilios Theodosakis, Chairman, Asia Minor Holocaust
Memorial Observance Committee; Nicholaos Taneris, President, Pan-Thracian Union
of America “Orpheus”; Tassos Efstratiades Esq., President Federation of Hellenic
American Organization of New Jersey; Demetrius Kalamaras Esq., President,
Federation of Hellenic Societies of Greater New York; Garo Manjikian, Executive
Director, Armenian National Committee of America Eastern Region; Paul
Kotrotsios, President, Hellenic American National Council; Elias Tsekerides,
President, International Confederation of Pontian Hellenes; Ted G. Spyropoulos,
USA Coordinator, World Council of Hellenes Abroad; The Honorable Evangelos
Kyriakopoulos, Consul, Republic of Greece; His Excellency Mr. Vassilis D.
Kaskarelis, Ambassador to the Republic of Greece; Chistos Mesaratzidis, Colonel,
Republic of Greece Military Attache; Evangelos Tssantzalos, Captain, Republic of
Greece Military Attache; The Honorable Koula Sofianou, Consul General, Republic
of Cyprus; keynote speaker Fanoulla Argyrou, researcher and author; and
