FANOULLA ARYGROU HONORS 91st PONTIAN GENOCIDE COMMEMORATIONS

For Immediate Release: May 22, 2010

Contact: Nikolaos Taneris, New York, Tel. (917) 699-9935

NEW YORK—Distinguished author and researcher Mrs. Fanoulla Argyrou presented her
scholarly findings based on her groundbreaking research in the British Foreign
Office to a broad range of youth organizations, community meetings, media
outlets and public events in the Greater New York area to commemorate the 91st
Anniversary of May 19th the International Remembrance Day for the Pontian Greek
Genocide, at the invitation of the Pan Pontian Federation of USA and CANADA

Mrs. F. Argyrou is specialised in the study of the British official released
Foreign Office documents on Cyprus with an experience of well over 20 years on
the matter. Argyrou has written 8 books (of the 8 books that Argyrou wrote, one
covers the Pontian Genocide) , numerous studies, speeches in conferences,
hundreds of articles in the Greek Cypriot press in Cyprus and is an associate
writer with London based newspapers “Ta Nea”, “Eleftheria” and “Simerini” in
Cyprus as well as others and Radio Proto in Cyprus. Her first hand research has
had strong affects on the political climate in Cyprus, and her findings have
raised serious questions about the official handling of the Cyprus question, and
the dangers involved with the Turkish-inspired bizonal bicommunal federation
plans. Arygrou’s research, political analysis and methodology in communicating
the truth about Turkish Crimes has inspired entire generations of activists. It
was with deep respect that she was received by patriots in the Greek-American
community.

Argyrou’s speeches and presentations focused on the British archival record
which is her specialty. However, also covered were timely revelations of fact,
including details on the war crimes background to Mehmet Ali Talat, and long
term efforts to Turkify the entire Greek Island of Cyprus, by means of the
bizonal bicommunal so-called “solutions” Also discussed was the importance of
the book “The Bloody Truth” (available for download on the CANA website and in
hard copy ,free of charge from CANA) In the book are details on the gory
massacres and cover-ups by the Turkish terrorist organizations Volgan and TMT,
as well as research that includes Turkish documents on Turkish Crimes in Cyprus.
This book presents irrefutable evidence against Turkey for its unpunished crimes
in Cyprus.

The overall success of Fanoulla Argyrou’s visit to New York was in hammering
home the truth, with irrefutable evidence, on the cycle of Genocide that Turkey
is responsible for from Asia Minor to Cyprus. And the fact that Turkey remains
and remained an aggressor because Turkey continues to escape punishment for its
crimes. Notable attendees and messages of support for the events came in from
Ted G. Spyropoulos, USA Coordinator, World Council of Hellenes Abroad and Dr.
Olga Sarantopoulos, Secretary of World Council of Hellenes Abroad who flew into
New York from Vienna. The events were also followed by a “who’s who” of Greek
and Greek-Cypriot journalists and academics, who like it or not, couldn’t stay
away from hearing the truth—almost the entire journalistic staff of The
National Herald TNH, Demetrios Rhombotis of AKTINA FM and staff from NEO
magazine, Alex Stephanopoulos and Despina Syriopoulou of Greek American News
Agency, Apostolos Zoupaniotis correspondent for RIK and CNA Cyprus News Agency,
and even Dr. Christos P. Ioannides the Director of the Center for Byzantine and
Modern Greek Studies at Queens College, City University of New York, to name
just a few.

ANCA MARKS ANNIVERSARY OF PONTIAN GENOCIDE

Reaffirms Commitment to a Truthful and Just Resolution of all of Turkey's
Genocidal Crimes

WASHINGTON, DC - The Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA) joined today
with Pontian Greeks - and all Hellenes, Assyrians, Syriacs, and other
communities representing the victims of Turkey's genocidal campaign against its
Christian minorities - in commemorating May 19th, the international day of
remembrance for the genocide initiated by the Ottoman Empire and continued by
Kemalist Turkey against the historic Greek population of Pontus along the
southeastern coast of the Black Sea.

"We join with all our brothers and sisters - in the Hellenic, Assyrian,
Chaldean, Syriac, and other Christian communities subjected to genocide under
Ottoman and Turkish rule - in solemnly marking the anniversary of the Pontian
Genocide - a genocide that remains unrecognized by its perpetrator and
unpunished by the international community," said Aram Hamparian, Executive
Director of the ANCA. "In commemorating this date, we reaffirm our determination
to work in concert with all the victims of Turkey's genocidal campaigns to
secure full recognition and justice for these crimes."

The Ottoman Empire, under the cover of World War I, undertook a systematic and
deliberate effort to eliminate its minority Christian populations. This
genocidal campaign resulted in the death and deportation of well over 2,000,000
Armenians, Assyrians, Chaldeans, Syriacs, and Greeks.

The Pontian Genocide has been formally acknowledged by Greece and Cyprus and,
within the United States, by the states of New York, New Jersey, Florida, South
Carolina, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and Illinois, among others.

91st ANNIVERSARY OF PONTIAN GREEK GENOCIDE COMMEMORATED IN NEW YORK CITY

New York, NY --- The Armenian National Committee of America Eastern Region (ANCA
ER) joined with a broad range of Greek American associations at the annual
commemoration of the Pontian Greek Genocide held at Bowling Green Park in New
York City. The solemn program coincided with a special flag raising ceremony to
mark the occasion.

The event was organized by the Pan-Pontian Federation of USA and Canada and the
Federation of Hellenic Societies of Greater New York. Gus Tsilfides, Director
of National Issues of the Pan-Pontian Federation of USA and Canada, serving as
the master of ceremonies, addressed the crowd and urged for decisive action for
recognition of the Pontian Genocide. Along with speakers from various Greek
American organizations, the commemoration also included statements delivered by
representatives of Greece and Cyprus, and a keynote speech from distinguished
author and researcher, Fanoulla Argyrou. The event also highlighted statewide
proclamations and resolutions recognizing the Pontian Genocide, and the
Ypsilantis Honor Award presented to the people of Sweden for passing a
resolution to recognize the Armenian, Greek, and Assyrian Genocide.

“91 years on and Turkey is still escaping punishment for those unprecedented
crimes of the past century. Turkey refuses to acknowledge those crimes, refuses
to apologize, the least expected of her, compromise with history and come to
terms with it,” said Argyrou. “Μodern Kemalist Turkey has been created over the
dead bodies of hundreds of thousands of Christian Armenians, Greeks, and
Assyrians, who were ethnically cleansed to pave the way for the new state of
Turkey. It is an established fact that modern Turkey evolved out of the ashes of
one of the most horrific genocides recorded at the beginning of the 20th
century.”

Speaking on behalf of the ANCA ER was Executive Director Garo Manjikian who
stated, “We are, most importantly, here to commemorate the victims of the
genocide - those who were brutally murdered by the Ottoman Turks and the newly
established Turkish Republic. We are also here to demand justice, because all
crimes call for justice. The absence of justice has allowed Turkey to continue
with aggressive policies towards its own minorities and even neighboring
countries. It is an issue that affects us today.”

Highlighted at the event was Rhode Island State Resolution, S2815, that
proclaims May 19, 2010 as “Greek Pontian Genocide Remembrance Day” in the state
of Rhode Island. The Rhode Island State Resolution was introduced by Senators
Leonidas Raptakis, Hanna Gallo, Paul Jabbour, Daniel Connors and Dennis Algiere.
Also noted were proclamations by New York State Senator George Onorato and State
Assembly Member Michael Gianaris.

Earlier in the day, candidate Michael Grimm, running in the Republican primary
race in New York’s 13th congressional district, released a statement
commemorating the Pontian Genocide. “Many people are unaware of the violence
and genocide perpetrated against the Pontian Greek population in Asia Minor at
the hands of the Turkish government during the early part of the twentieth
century, or the genocides that befell the Armenian and Assyrian populations of
the region. It is important for all New Yorkers and all Americans to recognize
Pontian Greek Genocide Remembrance Day because it is only by recognizing these
tragic events will we prevent their repetition in that region of the world and
elsewhere,” said Grimm. Currently representing New York’s 13th district is Rep.
Michael McMahon who opposes Armenian Genocide recognition.

Distinguished speakers and statements from those who could not attend include :
Gus Tsilfides, Director of National Issues, Pan-Pontian Federation of USA &
Canada; Reverend Father John Romas from the nearby historic St. Nicholas church
that was destroyed on 9/11; Vasilios Theodosakis, Chairman, Asia Minor Holocaust
Memorial Observance Committee; Nicholaos Taneris, President, Pan-Thracian Union
of America “Orpheus”; Tassos Efstratiades Esq., President Federation of Hellenic
American Organization of New Jersey; Demetrius Kalamaras Esq., President,
Federation of Hellenic Societies of Greater New York; Garo Manjikian, Executive
Director, Armenian National Committee of America Eastern Region; Paul
Kotrotsios, President, Hellenic American National Council; Elias Tsekerides,
President, International Confederation of Pontian Hellenes; Ted G. Spyropoulos,
USA Coordinator, World Council of Hellenes Abroad; The Honorable Evangelos
Kyriakopoulos, Consul, Republic of Greece; His Excellency Mr. Vassilis D.
Kaskarelis, Ambassador to the Republic of Greece; Chistos Mesaratzidis, Colonel,
Republic of Greece Military Attache; Evangelos Tssantzalos, Captain, Republic of
Greece Military Attache; The Honorable Koula Sofianou, Consul General, Republic
of Cyprus; keynote speaker Fanoulla Argyrou, researcher and author; and
Dimitrios Molohides, President, Pan-Pontian Federation of USA & Canada.

LETTER TO EDITOR: Cyprus has a long and ingrained Greek history

Letters to the Editor
The Washington Times
3600 New York Avenue, NE
Washington, DC 20002

To the Editor:

Cyprus gained its independence from the British Empire in 1960, but even the
British Ministry of Defense could not deny that for 3,500 years, Cyprus' Greek
identity of language and culture has been retained ("There are Turkish Cypriots,
too," Letters, Monday).

Over the centuries, numerous empires have come and gone, and quite a few ethnic
communities have blossomed in Cyprus: Armenians, Latins and even Arab Maronites.
But it was the yoke of the British Empire that sought to force the impression of
"two peoples" on the island in order to implement its partition plans. During
the 1955-59 struggle to liberate Cyprus, not a single Turkish Cypriot
participated. Instead, the British, with the aid of Turkey, established the
Turkish terrorist organizations Volgan and TMT to attack Greek Cypriots and
other communities, including even the Turkish Cypriots. It was the British who
recruited the Turkish Cypriots into their police and security forces to crack
down on anti-colonial activism.

The Turkish military invasion did not protect anyone's interests but those of
the mass murderers and rapists who pillaged the property of anyone who was not
Turkish. Scores of Greek and Armenian monasteries and churches have been
forcibly converted into hotels and casinos, and the Turkish military recently
went so far as to bulldoze a Neolithic settlement in order to plant Turkish
flags. In his letter, Timur Edib, former president of the Maryland American
Turkish Association, talks of the "balance" the Green Line has lent to Cyprus.
Balance? Hardly. Just ask the multitudes of nationalities that were displaced
forcibly or murdered by the Turkish military on the "Turkish-and-only-Turkish"
side of the Attila Line.

There are Turkish Cypriots, too

May 3, 2010

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: There are Turkish Cypriots, too

By
My family has more than a dozen missing relatives in Cyprus. Many disappeared in
the late 1960s, and others disappeared in 1974, so it was with great pleasure
that I read your article "Ghosts of conflict" (Geopolitics, March 31).
Unfortunately, such a well-written article about the humanity of the efforts of
young searchers working for the Committee on Missing Persons was politicized
with the comments in a Tuesday letter to the editor by Cyprus Ambassador Andreas
S. Kakouris. While the article went to great lengths to give an unbiased
explanation of past events and emphasized that the work of the committee was
only about bringing closure to families with missing relatives, Mr. Kakouris'
letter makes a blatant partisan and political statement that distorts the
article and is insensitive to the mission of the workers as well as to the
Turkish Cypriot population on the island.
The map to which Mr. Kakouris refers does not distort history or lack
sensitivity. It simply depicts the current status of the island and the existing
demographic reality. I would surely hope Mr. Kakouris did not intend to be
insensitive to my Cypriot family, members of which have lived there for more
than nine generations, by dismissing them as persons without status. The
establishment of the Green Line boundary has brought security and stability to
my family and balance to protect the interests of the island's two peoples. I am
grateful that you ran the article.

leading scholarly body of Genocide Scholars the IAGS (International Association
of Genocide Scholars) has also recognized the Pontian Greek Genocide. Numerous
events are held around the world commemorating May 19th, the international day
of remembrance for the Pontian Genocide perpetrated by the Ottoman Turkish
government, the Young Turks, and Kemalist Turkey directly under the rule of
Mustafa Kemal. Turkey’s genocidal campaign of systematic persecutions
,massacres, deportations, rapes and burnings of villages resulting in the
murder of the ancient Hellenic civilization of Pontus on the southeast coast of
the Black sea—was initiated by the Ottoman Turkish government during World War
I and continued into the nationalist era of Kemalist Turkey, and was carried out
under the command of various Turkish government leaders --such as Talaat Pasha
who today has a major thoroughfare named in his honor in Angora, Mustafa Kemal
today honored as ‘father of the Turks’ ,and Topal Osman (leader of irregulars
called Chetes whose specific job was the rape and massacre of women, children
and the elderly) today honored by Turkey with statues in his likeness in our
Pontus homeland. Turkey today denies responsibility for this crime.

In Canada the Pan Pontian Federation USA and CANADA will join a diverse group of
organizations in the month of May in the anti-Genocide event “United We Rock”,
